Really…? Where did the season go? This sucks! Anyway, our picks last week went 2-3, so we are 36-27-2 on the season. With just two games on the schedule today, here’s to ending on a high note (before all our bowl picks!).
Baylor vs. Texas
So, a win and Baylor is likely in the Sugar Bowl, while Texas will desperately try to end their season on a high note in what is essentially their ‘bowl game’. This spread is big enough that is has me intrigued by UT. Can Texas just control the ball/clock with their run game long enough to keep the Baylor offense off the field? I think so.
Also, the Texas D has done an outstanding job forcing turnovers lately, while that has been a weakness of the Bears since Seth Russell went down. The Longhorns are +7 on the year in turnovers, finishing even or ahead in takeaways in 8 of 12 games. Meantime, Baylor has turned it over 11 times in their last three, and two or more times in four of their last five.
As the coaching carousel continues and it appears more and more likely Charlie Strong is staying at Texas, his players are auditioning heading into the offseason. I like the ‘Horns to cover the big number.
The Pick: Texas +21.5
West Virginia vs. Kansas State
The game has lost some of it’s intrigue since Kansas State is going to a bowl game regardless of whether or not they finish 6-6 or 5-7. But, West Virginia is trying to close their season on a 5-game winning streak. A big reason for their recent success is their ground game which is averaging over 240 yards/game. Granted, the Wildcats have a solid run D, but K-State just isn’t very good this season. They have beaten Iowa State and Kansas in conference play, with the Cyclones win being more about Paul Rhoads’ miserable clock management.
As much respect as I have for Bill Snyder as a coach, he’s getting too much for this game. K-State’s wins are South Dakota, UTSA, Louisiana Tech, and then KU and Iowa State.
The Mountaineers are 0-3 against Bill Snyder and the Wildcats since joining the Big 12, but that changes today in a big way.
The Pick: West Virginia -6
