oklahoma sooners joe mixon

Less than a week after the Cincinnati Bengals drafted Joe Mixon in the second round of the NFL Draft, a local TV station, WCPO, an ABC affiliate, is calling for a boycott of the team this fall.

In an online editorial, the station writes:

It’s time we as fans tried to teach this team a lesson. We say tried because at this point, we have to wonder if the leaders of this team will EVER get it.

Maybe the only way is through the Bengals’ pocketbook.

We are urging every Bengals fan to take drastic action.

Instead of buying a Bengals ticket this year, take the $50 or more you would have spent on that ticket and donate the money to a nonprofit that works to prevent violence against women. We have included a list of organizations below.

Enough is enough, Bengals. We can excuse another season without winning a playoff game.

We can’t excuse drafting a player like Joe Mixon.

Frankly, whether you agree or disagree with this TV station’s decision, you should respect their right to say this and support this viewpoint.

I’m 100% behind free speech and letting the free market play itself out. If the fans actually do boycott the Bengals over Mixon, he will be promptly cut and out of work. Is it fair? Doesn’t matter, the free market decided. If the fans continue to show up and cheer for Mixon when he scores a touchdown, than so be it, the marketplace decided how important Mixon’s past was to them.

All that being said, I don’t think enough fans will boycott, or even consider boycotting, Bengals games for this to matter.

But it’s an interesting attempt at trying to take a stand against something and I’ll be interested to see how it plays out.
