With Tom Herman gone from the Houston Cougars to the Texas Longhorns, Ed Oliver believes the vibe at Houston spring practice has been … different. And apparently, the All-American defensive tackle believes that is a good thing.
When asked to compare this spring to last spring, Oliver responded by saying, “It just feels like a lot less yelling and a lot more coaching. I can say that so far, a lot less yelling and a lot more coaching.”

Major Applewhite is the new head coach for the Cougars. He was on the staff as the offensive coordinator and ended up replacing Herman, beating out Lane Kiffin and others.
Oliver was the gem of Herman’s 2016 recruiting class, back when Houston fans actually thought Herman wasn’t using the program as a stepping stone job and bought into his #HTownTakeover. Oliver lived up to the hype in his freshman season, starting all 12 regular season games, while racking up 60 tackles and 5 sacks. Oliver became a First-Team All-American and also went on to win the Bill Willis Trophy, given to the nation’s top defensive lineman.
In his pre-spring practice press conference the other day, Herman clearly admitted he runs a tough and intense practice. So there’s very likely some truth to what Oliver said. Or, the defensive end is also upset because Herman said the other day, “I mean, I’ve seen Todd Orlando make chicken salad out of some lesser parts, so I have a lot of confidence in that staff and what they’re able to do with whatever talent that we’ve inherited.”
Todd Orlando was Herman’s defensive coordinator at Houston and is now with him at Texas. Could that have been a shot at the Houston defense from last season? Maybe.
But kudos to Oliver. Now Houston has to go out and maintain that same success they did under Herman, or the former head coach’s style will be proven correct, regardless of if it was “more yelling than coaching.”
