For the second time this offseason, a former Red Raider is heading to Baton Rouge. Wide receiver Jonathan Giles announced on Twitter Monday he is transferring to LSU.

So Giles joins former Red Raiders defensive tackle Breiden Fehoko, who announced he was leaving Tech in January and chose LSU in April.

Coming out of high school, Giles was rated as a 3-star prospect and the No. 66 wide receiver in the nation, according to Scout.com.

Giles’ top 10 list included LSU, Ohio State, Florida State, Georgia, Tennessee, Louisville, Purdue, Wisconsin, Oregon and SMU.

The loss of Giles is a big loss for Kliff Kingsbury and the Red Raiders, even with their depth at the wide receiver position. Giles was Tech’s leading receiver and a Biletnikoff Award semifinalist last season. He caught 69 passes for 1,158 yards and 13 touchdowns.

But it’s possible that Giles’ decision to transfer is based more on a strained relationship with the coaching staff in Lubbock. Jonathan Giles was benched in the next-to-last game of the season, a 66-10 loss at Iowa State, and spent spring practice mostly with the second team behind Cameron Batson.

Giles will have to sit out the 2017 season to comply with NCAA transfer rules, after which he’ll be able to play two seasons.
