kansas spring game preview

As we hit the home stretch of spring football, another one of 4 Big 12 spring games taking place this weekend is in Lawrence, Kansas. It’s been a rough go of it for David Beaty, but you can see there is progress being made on the recruiting trail and on the field, with last season’s highlight coming in a win over Texas. The Jayhawks will try to build on that victory and maybe pick up another couple Big 12 wins this fall. But first, here are 5 things to keep an eye on in the Kansas spring game this Saturday.

1. Quarterback

It’s always about the quarterback, isn’t it? Who gets more reps with the first team: JUCO transfer and former Washington State QB Peyton Bender or returnee Carter Stanley.

Beaty has been quietly praising both quarterbacks this spring. He said about Bender, “The ball gets out so quick. That was impressive. The more that he plays with our guys I think there’s some good things to see in the future.” But he’s given plenty of love to Stanley, saying “That dude worked his tail off. He had a terrific offseason.”

I have no feel what direction Beaty and his staff wants to go with this move, but the spring game should give fans and media a better look into where the race stands based on who gets more first-team snaps, who looks sharper, more poised, etc.

It’s actually a fun time for KU fans when you can follow a QB race and you can feel pretty good about either guy winning the job. The tide is slowly turning in Lawrence.
