NCAA Football: Texas at Texas Tech

Another recruit from the Texas Longhorns 2016 recruiting class is heading out the door. Sophomore linebacker Erick Fowler has been granted his release from the football program and will transfer.

Fowler was the top prospect in the 2016 class and an Army All-American. He was a five-star recruit who was rated as the 13th-best prospect in the country by Rivals.com in 2016. He played in nine games as a true freshman, mostly on special teams, and registered only one tackle on the season.

A statement from the University read, “Longhorn freshman linebacker Erick Fowler has been granted his release from The University of Texas and will transfer.”

Fowler famously flipped his commitment from LSU to Texas on signing day. His brief tenure in Austin got off to a rough start when he was not cleared to practice until mid-August due to academic issues.

Fowler is the fourth player from the 2016 class to leave the program. Defensive linemen Marcel Southall and Jordan Elliott and tight end Peyton Aucoin have also all left the program in recent months. The four players were all recruited by Charlie Strong, who was fired following the 2016 season.
