College football spring games continue this weekend, and one of the most anticipated will be the Oklahoma spring game in Norman. The Sooners are the favorite to win the Big 12 conference again this fall, as they try for the three-peat under QB Baker Mayfield.
The Oklahoma spring game kicks off at 1:00 at Gaylord Family – Oklahoma Memorial Stadium. For more information on the game and how to get your $5 tickets, just check out more here. The day’s festivities begin at 8 a.m. with the annual OU Spring Sale in McCasland Field House.
So even though the Sooners have very high expectations, there are areas of the team that fans should keep a close eye on this Saturday.
Samaje Perine and Joe Mixon will be selected later this month in the NFL Draft. So it’s next man up at Running Back U. The three who are the frontrunners for the bulk of the carries are Rodney Anderson, Abdul Adams and Trey Sermon.
Anderson has dealt with injuries his first two seasons in Norman and has not been getting hit in spring practice. So it’s fair to wonder how much time he’ll see in the game, if the staff wants him to remain 100% healthy heading into the summer. But at some point Anderson has to get comfortable taking hits again, right? If he is fully recovered from his next injury, then the spring game seems like a good opportunity to ease into it.
Meantime, Abdul Adams is the only one of the three who got some reps last season (53 carries, 283 yards), and seems to be the forgotten man of the three because of the hype around the return of Anderson and the anticipated debut of Sermon. But Adams is the most predictable and reliable of the group.
Sermon comes in as the most recent in a long list of highly-touted running back recruits in Norman. The early enrollee came to OU over offers from basically every SEC powerhouse and will push for playing time immediately. It’ll be fun to see what he can do in his first “game action” with the Sooners.
