Gonsioroski underwent chemotherapy and had an eight-pound tumor in his chest before it was removed in June 2016. He returned to the football field last fall and helped lead his team to the 2016 Class B playoffs. He ended up picking Texas Tech over offers from Montana State, Montana and North Dakota.
Red Raiders head coach Kliff Kingsbury issued a statement saying:
“We are deeply saddened to learn of Luke’s passing. Luke was not only an exceptional athlete, he was also an incredible person, great student and leader in his community. He was such an inspiration through his fight and unwavering faith. It was truly an honor to know him. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends and everyone whose lives he touched.”
Gonsioroski was under hospice care and passed away on Monday at his family’s ranch.
Our condolences go out to the Gonsioroski family.
