This week is no time for Buffalo coach Jeff Quinn to belabor negatives or spill drops of water on seeds of doubt in his players’ minds.
Yes, his defense just got skewered by lightly regarded Army. But looming in two days is the Greatest Show on College Turf. The eighth-ranked, point-a-minute, wave-at-you-on-the-way-to-the-end-zone Baylor Bears visit UB Stadium Friday night.
Was Quinn belaboring the 47 points and 466 yards his defense gave up to Army? Hah. He was directing all of his prodigious enthusiasm at getting his defenders in the right frame of mind.
“I believe in this football team,” Quinn said. “We’re building our self-confidence. Understand your ability. We have a very talented group of young men. Our coaches believe in them. They believe in themselves. That’s very, very important not thinking about what can go wrong, but always think about what can go right. When you’re in a game with a competitive environment like that, you have to have that mindset.”
