Ten years ago, Gloria Perine took her 8-year-old son to sign up for his first season of Pop Warner football after their family moved to Pflugerville, Texas.
“Nobody believed that he was actually 8,” she remembered. “In Pop Warner; you have to show the birth certificate, but they were really interested in seeing his.”
Nobody is asking for Samaje Perine’s birth certificate these days, but Oklahoma’s true freshman running back is certainly playing at a level beyond his years. Through three games, he’s rushed for 177 yards and a touchdown, and will likely see his carries increase this weekend at West Virginia because of leading rusher Keith Ford’s fractured fibula.
Perine was born in Alabama and grew up a huge Crimson Tide fan. Even after his family moved to Pflugerville — an Austin suburb — he continued following ’Bama.
