Former Texas Tech WR Eric Ward Jr. joins Elgin TX HS staff

According to the Times Record News, former Texas Tech wide receiver Eric Ward Jr. is joining his former high school coach Jim Garfield’s staff at Elgin High School in Texas.

Ward played for Garfield at Rider High, right outside of Wichita Falls. He spent the past two seasons coaching at his alma mater under Marc Bindel.

Ward is now reunited with his old coach as, what else, but the receivers coach.

Garfield left Rider in 2014 after an impressive run at Rider, where he led the Raiders to their first state semifinal in 2012. He’s now trying to build a program at Elgin that went 1-6-1 last season.

As for his hiring of Ward, Garfield told the Times Record News:

“He’s going to be successful. He’s going to be a successful teacher. He’s going to be a successful businessman. He’s going to be a successful father. He’s got his life mapped out. It’s because of his work ethic and because he’s got a moral compass.”

I love reading stories like this.

If you recall, Ward decided not to enter the NFL Draft in 2013, but then his numbers dropped during his senior season for multiple reasons including having two freshman QB’s in Baker Mayfield and Davis Webb, along with the team targeting tight end Jace Amaro more often. As a result, Ward went undrafted in 2014, but did sign a free agent deal with the Titans. He was released in September of 2014 and was signed by the Bengals in January. Obviously, his NFL career did not pan out like many expected. But, he sounds like a truly grounded individual that is looking to help kids reach their goals, and will also be putting his Masters of Education to use. Kudos to Eric Ward Jr.!
