Dana Holgorsen: There are no similarities between WVU in 2016 and 2012

With the Mountaineers sitting at 5-0 and in the Top 15 of the AP Poll, the WVU faithful is starting to look back to the last time the team began the season 5-0. That was in 2012, when the Mountaineers reached as high as #5 in the AP Poll and up to #4 in the Coaches Poll. West Virginia went on to lose 5 straight games and finished the season 7-6

But, when a question came up at Tuesday’s press conference about what he “tells his players based on good starts his team’s have had in the past”, Holgorsen put an immediate stop to that comparison, saying, “I don’t think anybody truly knows that answer until we go through it. Y’all are thinking 2012, I know y’all are. This is a totally different team. There’s no similarities between the two teams [2012 and 2016]. I think this team is a good group of kids that like each other and like playing the game. They didn’t listen when everybody was saying we sucked and they’re not going to listen when everybody’s saying we’re good. It’s pretty much as simple as that. So, I’m expecting these guys to show up today and be anxious about their preparation and get ready for a really good TCU team.”

Holgorsen went on to praise the Horned Frogs saying, “This is our hardest game yet. It’s not even close. The challenges that these guys pose in the 3 phases of the game, it’s far and away the hardest game of the year.”

Hoglorsen is right, this program is in much better shape than it was in 2012. It’s not even close.

But, will they pull off the win this season? And are they legitimate contenders to win the Big 12 title? Let us know in the comments below!
