West Virginia’s Tony Gibson signs 3-year extension with Mountaineers

The West Virginia Mountaineers have agreed to a 3-year extension with defensive coordinator Tony Gibson.

The university announced Wednesday afternoon that Gibson and West Virginia agreed to and signed a three-year contract worth a total of $2.7 million.

After losing several starters from 2015, West Virginia’s defense far exceeded expectations this past season.  WVU was second in the Big 12 allowing 23.4 points per game, which ranked 34th in the FBS. The Mountaineers led the Big 12 with 25 turnovers (12th nationally). In conference play, WVU’s defense was the conference’s best in total defense, scoring defense, and was second in rushing defense.

Right now, Texas’ Todd Orlando, who came with Tom Herman from Houston, is the highest paid defensive coordinator in the Big 12, signing a deal for $1 million per year. Baylor’s Phil Bennett is the second-highest paid defensive coordinator in the Big 12, with Oklahoma’s Mike Stoops coming in third. It seems very unlikely that Matt Rhule brings back Bennett, so if that happens,Gibson’s $900,000 average annual salary would match Stoops’ salary, making them tied for second-highest paid defensive coordinators in the Big 12.

In a statement, head coach Dana Holgorsen, who recently received his own contract extension, said, “I have said many times that Gibby has done a great job with our defense, and I want him to continue to lead our defense. Our players respond to him, and the scheme fits our program well. Tony has the defense playing with an edge and it shows in the results.”

Gibson has been on Holgorsen’s staff for the past four seasons, the last three as defensive coordinator. The 14th-ranked Mountaineers are getting ready to take on Miami in the Russell Athletic Bowl at 5:30 p..m. Wednesday, Dec. 28 at in Orlando, Florida.
