5. Place Kicker
Cole Netten, as do many place kickers, never get the love they deserve. Netten was 16/17 on field goal attempts, with his only miss coming in the second-to-last game of the year against Texas. He hit two field goals longer than 40 yards, with his longest of 49. He was a unanimous First-Team All-Big 12 in 2016 and was named the Jim Doran Outstanding Special Teams Player. Netten ended his career with school records in scoring (300), field goal pct. (79.4), PATs (138), total kicks made (192) and consecutive field goals made (15).
So, good luck to rising redshirt junior Chris Francis! Francis handled the kickoffs last season, but will venture into his first season as the full-time place kicker. The good news is he did handle all kickoffs last season and has for the past season and a half. So hopefully any nerves are gone, but you just never know with this position. It’s such a mental and emotional job, as much as physical.
While the stakes aren’t high on Saturday in the Iowa State spring game, I’ll be curious to see how Netten does.
