Oklahoma spring game preview: 5 things to watch

bob stoops oklahoma spring game preview

Defensive alignment

On National Signing Day, Bob Stoops announced the team would move away from its 3-man front and back to the 4-man front the Sooners used in 2012. At the time, Stoops said, “Yeah, because of all the spread we get, we just feel we’re gonna base out of a four-man front and jump into the odd occasionally, as opposed to being in an odd and jumping into a four-man front. That’s something we’ll concentrate on in the spring. With the amount of passing that we get, we feel that will allow us to get more pressure just from a four-man rush.”

So, let’s see how the spring focus on the 4-man front looks in the Oklahoma spring game.

When Mike Stoops came back to OU in 2012, the team flipped from a 3-4 to a 4-3. But the run defense was so bad that season, they switched back to the 3-4. So will the run defense suffer because of the switch this time around? Hopefully not. Plus the talent the Sooners have at linebacker is so loaded (Rick DeBerry, Caleb Kelly, Kapri Doucet, Ogbonnia Okoronkwo), this should be a much smoother transition than it was in 2012.
