There are two Big 12 spring games this weekend, the final two for the conference. The Kansas State Wildcats will take the field on Saturday to give their fans a glimpse of what they hope will be fun 2017 season. Already, there are many people, including us, calling Kansas State the dark horse contender to win the Big 12. Here are five things to keep an eye on in Saturday’s Kansas State spring game.
1. Back up quarterback
With returning starter Jesse Ertz out this spring following shoulder surgery, sophomore Alex Delton has been the quarterback working with the No. 1 offense and Skylar Thompson has been mostly working with the second unit.
Delton has been around the program longer, but it’s Thompson who I am most excited to see in the Kansas State spring game. Thompson was a 4-star recruit and top 10 dual-threat quarterback in last year’s class. He seems to have the right, “Kansas State” approach as well, saying, “All I try to do is focus on myself and get better each day, like coach Snyder always says. That’s the best approach to have.”
Both Delton and Thompson are dual-threat QBs and seeing how each plays in their respective time on the field will be fun to compare and contrast. While Ertz was healthy in 2016, we know how fragile he’s been in the past, so whoever is named the No. 2 QB this year could have their hands full (but we hope that isn’t the case).
