Some college football fans aren’t NFL fans and some NFL fans aren’t college football fans. But if you’re a college football fan, or more specifically, a Big 12 football fan, without an NFL team, I’ve got the team for you to start pulling for.
The Philadelphia Eagles.
Why?
Well as most teams are shying away from Big 12 players in the NFL Draft, the Eagles used two of their draft picks in the first 5 rounds on West Virginia Mountaineers.
Philly selected cornerback Rasul Douglas in the third round and then wide receiver Shelton Gibson in the fifth round. Both are going to end up as solid pros. Then they added Big 12 players via the undrafted free agent route as well. First up was another former Mountaineer, in center Tyler Orlosky. It’s still stunning to me he didn’t get drafted.
Most recently, the Eagles scooped up former Oklahoma DT Charles Walker, along with former Iowa State cornerback Jomal Wiltz. And if you want to go for a stretch, Philadelphia picked up former Houston quarterback Greg Ward Jr., who played for now-Texas head coach Tom Herman.
But not only did the Eagles go heavy on Big 12 players in this 2017 class, they already had a solid stable of players on the roster with Big 12 ties.
Last year the Eagles used a couple draft picks in Big 12 players. They selected West Virginia running back Wendell Smallwood, along with TCU offensive tackle Halapoulivaati Vaitai.
Then, there’s the crop of former Big 12 veterans on the team, including Kansas State running back Darren Sproles, Oklahoma offensive tackle Lane Johnson and Oklahoma wide receiver Dorial Green-Beckham. OK, so Green-Beckham never actually played for OU, but on the Eagles roster, his school is listed as Oklahoma!
Philly also had a pair of former Longhorns on the roster in linebacker Jordan Hicks and wide receiver Marcus Johnson.
I realize Philadelphia isn’t the easiest city to like, hell they booed Santa Claus, but if you hop on with the Eagles, you certainly wouldn’t be joining a bandwagon, as the Eagles haven’t won an NFL Championship since 1960.
Give it some thought…
