It doesn’t appear as if Lincoln Riley is going anywhere anytime soon. The University of Oklahoma and Riley have agreed on a 3-year extension worth a reported $1.3 million per year.
That means Riley gets about a $400,000 raise and moves him into the top 5 highest paid assistants in college football, according to the most recent numbers released in December by USA Today.
Riley said in a statement, “I appreciate OU and Coach Stoops taking a chance on me a couple of years ago and the loyalty they’ve shown to my family. We are extremely grateful, and I want to display my strong loyalty to this school and program in return. We absolutely love living here. It’s a place we relate to, a place we feel very much at home. I love the people I work with at OU and I love the players I coach. It’s been a fantastic first two years, but I’m excited for what’s ahead in Norman. We’re looking forward to being a part of this university and community for a long time.”
If Oklahoma wants Lincoln Riley to be the coach-in-waiting, then this is a heck of a way to show your love and support for the guy. Pay him enough where he doesn’t get that itch to jump to be a head coach. There have been several reports that Riley is extremely happy is Norman and is not the type to jump at the first head coaching opportunity that comes his way.
With all that being said, Bob Stoops is only 56 years old and shows no sign of slowing down, so we’ll see how this plays out over the next few years.
Stoops said about the extension for Riley, “This has been in the works for a few months. Lincoln’s done a phenomenal job in his two years here and we’re excited for him and his family. They’re great people and have fully immersed themselves into the Oklahoma community.”
In 2016, the Sooners offense was humming, setting an NCAA record for passing efficiency rating, leading the nation in pass completion percentage, ranked second in total offense and third in scoring offense.
