6. Kansas Jayhawks (29-23, 11-10)
The knock on Kansas all year long was the fact they held a losing overall record. Kansas can clinch a winning overall record, and eligibility to be selected into an NCAA Regional with one more victory. This team has four more games remaining in the regular season and is currently six games over .500. Add in a double elimination Big 12 Conference Tournament, and Kansas is assured they will not finish below .500 this season.
The Jayhawks won the Sunflower Showdown this weekend at home against rival and cellar dweller Kansas State. Now, Kansas is playing to get into the NCAA Tournament. A good start to strengthening its bubble would be to take a road series this weekend from Texas Tech in Lubbock. At this moment, Kansas fans will want to root for teams with strong resumes during the conference tournaments.
7. West Virginia Mountaineers (30-20, 11-10)
It has been a disappointing May for West Virginia baseball. This week they lost a midweek game to Penn State at home. The Nittany Lions are currently 209 in the RPI rankings. Ouch! The Nomads did take care of business over the weekend against Gardner-Webb by sweeping a two-game series. The Nomads go back on the road, and this time, they will face Texas. West Virginia is currently on the regional hosting bubble. They are No.20 in the RPI and currently sport a winning road record. Take one game in Austin, and they clinch the winning road record.
I’m not too worried about whether West Virginia hosts or not. They’re proven road warriors. What worries me about them entering the NCAA Regionals is their current downward spiral. Over the past month, the Nomads have gone from being No.1 after taking a series from TCU to becoming No.7 now. They need to gain their confidence back before the NCAA Regionals.
8.Oklahoma State Cowboys (24-24, 6-14)
Stick a fork in Oklahoma State. They are done. The Cowboys were swept at home by Baylor. It was a must-win series for Oklahoma State, if not a must-sweep. Now, the Cowboys will just be lucky to earn a spot in the Big 12 Tournament. Oklahoma State was picked second in the preseason poll this year by the head coaches in this conference. Wow! What a disappointment. This weekend is Bedlam. Let’s see if that will wake up the Cowboys. If not, they may be playing their final games this weekend.
9.Kansas State Wildcats (27-24, 6-15)
It’s hard to complain about a 6-15 team getting “hosed”, but just for the record, that’s a very strong possibility. Oklahoma State dropped two home games to Texas earlier this season with the third being cancelled. If Texas sweeps Oklahoma State, these two teams are tied. Here’s the uphill scenario: Kansas State goes on the road to face a hot Baylor team. They have to win one more game than Oklahoma State does this weekend. Then again, Oklahoma State won the season series. So, is there really too much to complain about here? Regardless, whoever did score that eighth and final spot in the Big 12 Tournament, would have to win it in order to be selected to an NCAA Regional.
