If you were surprised to see the Texas Longhorns ranked in the Top 25 of the AP Poll earlier this month, you’re not alone. The head coach of the Longhorns, Tom Herman, also admitted it caught him off guard.
Herman was a guest of the Paul Finebaum show on Friday and when asked about the Longhorns coming in at #23, Herman said:
“Teams are different from year to year, some better, some worse, and some right at where some people expect them to be. But you’re not going to know anything about anybody until really the first few ball games of the season. So I’ll let the people that like to guess and speculate and do all that, we’ll worry about what we can control. I was probably as surprised as you, because I just, um, it seems a bit odd to me certainly that a team coming off three-straight seven-loss seasons would be ranked in the Top 25. But maybe those guys know something I don’t.”
Woof. Do I think Herman really believes his team is not Top 25 worthy? No. But he’s playing a mind game with his players so they don’t get big heads heading into a season, when, like he correctly points out, this group has done nothing to deserve a Top 25 ranking.
But we all know the Longhorns certainly have the talent to be a Top 25 team. Do I think they’re Chip Brown 12-1 good? Hell no. But we did make our case for how UT could end up in the College Football Playoff. Boy does everything have to break right for them.
More likely is a 7-9 win season and huge expectations entering 2018. But hey, it never hurts to dream big if you’re a Texas fan. Just be prepared, because you’ve been disappointed before.
