Brent Venables on possibility of replacing Bill Snyder: ‘I don’t know about that’
Despite reports this week that Bill Snyder is coming back for the 2018 season, that doesn’t end the speculation for what will happen in Manhattan whenever The Wizard’s time is up.
A name that’s been attached to the job in recent years is Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables, who played under Snyder in the 1990’s. Venables has become a nationally-known name for his success with Dabo Swinney and the Tigers.
Venables was recently asked about possibly replacing Snyder one day and told The Clemson Insider, “I don’t know, I don’t know. Everybody says, ‘He is going to go to Kansas State.’ Hey man, look! Nobody has more love and respect for the people there, Coach Snyder, what we’ve achieved. But are you going to be the guy to follow modern day Bear Bryant at Kansas State? I don’t know about that.”
“They have plenty of really good quality people over there and hopefully Coach Snyder coaches another 10-plus years. He has been amazing with what he has been able to do. As an alumnus, I am super proud of how the Cats play year in and year out and how they compete. That is all because of Coach Snyder.”
Of course, it’s well known that Snyder wants his son, Sean, to replace him as the head coach, whenever that time comes. But the fan base appears fairly evenly split on what is best for the future of the football program.
Venables also said he hopes Snyder leads the Wildcats for a long time, saying, “They have plenty of really good, quality people over there, and hopefully Coach Snyder coaches another 10-plus years. He has been amazing with what he has been able to do. As an alumnus, I am super proud of how the Cats play year in and year out and how they compete. That is all because of Coach Snyder.”
Of course, Bill Snyder will be 88 in ten years, so even that might be a bit of a stretch from Venables.
Snyder has had unprecedented success at Kansas State, going 209-110-1 in two stints as coach of the Wildcats.
