The TCU Horned Frogs defense got a huge boost on Thursday when defensive end Ben Banogu announced he would be returning for his senior season.
Ben Banogu became one of the elite pass rushers in the Big 12 conference this season, finishing with 8.5 sacks, which was second in the conference behind teammate Mat Boesen. He was also third in the Big 12 with 16.5 tackles for loss and finished with three forced fumbles, in the top 5 in the Big 12.
Banogu burst onto the scene after sitting out in 2016 following his transfer from Louisiana-Monroe. Some thought Banogu could sneak his way into the first round, since pass rushers come at such a premium in the NFL, but Banogu was wise to come back and hone his craft for one more season under Gary Patterson, one of the best defensive minds in college football.
Banogu made the 2017 first-team All-Big 12 team with fellow TCU defensive players Mat Boesen, Travin Howard, Nick Orr and Ranthony Texada. But, the other four are seniors, so it’s Banogu who will step into one of the leadership roles for the Horned Frogs on defense in 2018.
