On Sunday, I got the chance to speak with Jacoby Simpson out of Houston, TX (Aldine Macarthur HS). According to 247Sports, Jacoby is listed as a 3-star ILB and holds a total of 15 offers (four of them from Big 12 schools) to date. While he doesn’t have a top list, there are two Big 12 schools that stick out, but it appears now that a third Big 12 school could shake things up. Here is my interview with Jacoby about his recruitment.
HCS: Is it fair to say that TCU and Kansas State are the 2 biggest players in your recruitment?
Jacoby Simpson: “Yes they are, but Texas Tech (offered on Jan. 11th) is beginning to get in the mix a little more now.”
HCS: Which schools have you visited, and will you be visiting any other schools anytime soon?
Simpson: “I have already taken a visit to Arizona State and Kansas State. I plan on visiting TCU next week.”
HCS: You were once committed to Arizona State, what ultimately lead you to decommit from there?
Simpson: “It was definitely the coaching changes.”
HCS: When deciding upon a school, what is the biggest factor to get your signature?
Simpson: “Obviously the coaches are a big factor, but it has to feel like I’ll have the best opportunities at that school. That means the best opportunity to get a degree and to go pro. Location and stadium attendance isn’t really that important to me.”
HCS: Is there anything about the recruiting process that has really stuck out to you? Was there a memorable moment or anything like that?
Simpson: “Well, one thing that really surprised me is how a lot of coaches say something like they are reading off a script, but one memorable moment is when I got three offers in one day.”
HCS: Being and ILB, how do you feel like you would fit in the Big 12 since it is a pass happy league?
Simpson: “Well, I know I’m versatile enough to cover a back or slot. I’m used to filling gaps but adapting shouldn’t be a problem.”
HCS: When will you be announcing your commitment?
Simpson: “February 7th, on NSD.”
