The Big 12 preseason baseball poll is out and it’s expected to be a tight race at the top. Texas Tech takes the top spot with 61 total votes, compared to 60 by TCU.
2018 Big 12 Preseason Coaches’ Poll
|1.||Texas Tech (5)||61|
Texas Tech earned five of nine first-place votes, while TCU had four. Then there was a big drop off, but a tight race between three, four and five.
The Red Raiders have won the Big 12 conference each of the past two seasons, finishing last spring 45-17 overall and 16-8 in Big 12 play. Last year, they were technically named co-champions with TCU. But the Red Raiders disappointed in postseason play, unable to get out of the regionals, losing to Sam Houston State.
Tech is expected to have the best rotation in the conference and one of the best in the country led by Steven Gingery, Davis Martin and Ryan Shetter.
It’s the first time since 1999 that Texas Tech has been picked to win the conference, and the first time in four years that TCU hasn’t been the preseason favorite. K-State finished a distant 9th place as the Wildcats are losing lots of production from last season including Quintin Crandall, Josh Ethier and pitcher Jordan Floyd (10th round pick by the Royals).
The 2018 season begins on Friday, Feb. 16, with conference play starting the weekend of March 16.
