With over 35 offers, Grant Gunnell is considered the top quarterback prospect in the state of Texas for the 2019 class. It’s easy to see why Gunnell is so highly sought after because of his size (6’6-212) and arm strength. On Sunday, I got to see Grant in person at The Opening in Houston. Even though the rain came down hard, Grant still displayed his talent throwing the football. Afterwards, I was able to speak with the state’s top quarterback on his recruitment and where things stands.
HCS: How do you think you did at The Opening?
Grant Gunnell: “I thought I threw very well and consistent.”
HCS: How big of a factor did the weather play for you?
Gunnell: “It was tough when the ball was wet but I thought I fought through it well.”
HCS: Who is a receiver that you feel like is underrated that nobody knows about?
Gunnell: “Noah Smith from Cy-Ridge (Houston, TX).”
HCS: Do you have a top schools list or is there any school that sticks out to you right now?
Gunnell: “No, not right now. Everything is open right now.”
HCS: Do you have a top Big 12 school that jumps out to you?
Gunnell: “Oklahoma State and TCU.”
HCS: What sticks out to you about Oklahoma State?
Gunnell: “I love coach Yurcich (OC) and coach Gundy (HC). I feel like I fit that offense perfect.”
HCS: How about TCU?
Gunnell: “I love coach Cumbie (OC). He’s awesome and I think I’d fit in the offense very well and he showed me how I would when I went out there which is pretty cool.”
HCS: What are your thoughts about the Big 12?
Gunnell: “It’s definitely a passing league and I think I can thrive in it.”
