Johnson is 5’11”, 217 pounds, which might seem undersized, but it’s actually ideal for the defense Gary Patterson runs and especially in the Big 12, which needs speed at every positive. Johnson finished last season with 98 tackles, 18 tackles for loss, five interceptions and three sacks. This was a huge jump from the 2016 season, when he played in just three games with 13 tackles due to injury. His freshman season he played 11 games and had 31 tackles.
The Horned Frogs do have to replace a couple of key linebackers who left the program due to graduation in Travin Howard and Sammy Douglas.
Pro Football Focus rated him as the highest-graded linebacker in the FBS in 2017.
