HCS Roundtable: One Bold Big 12 Football Prediction

NCAA Football: Oklahoma at Texas

The Heartland College Sports staff is busy at work with the season kicking off in one week. We’re continuing to banter various topics before the season gets underway. One of those topics came up in recent days. What is one “bold prediction” you have for this fall. Some might be considered more bold than others, but we pride ourselves on not having any Skip Bayless wannabes around here. So with all that being said, let’s get down to it. Reminder: We are partnered with BetNow.EU – the website we are using to place our Big 12 bets this fall! Using promo code “Heartland” for a 100% sign up bonus!

Pete Mundo: I actually gave you five bold predictions earlier this week. You can read them all by clicking here.

Derek Duke: Kansas will win the Big 12. Kidding! My one bold prediction is TEXAS IS BACK! By back I mean they reach the Big 12 title game in December. Before you ask Pete to do a staff drug test, hear me out. The defense is fine people. Todd Orlando is still the DC and I know some think the Longhorns are losing a lot on that side but as an overall unit, I think they will be better this season. They are crazy deep in the secondary and have some great pieces at linebacker and defensive line. Now the question for them is the offense. That offense line was atrocious last year but it was because they were decimated by injuries. Now fully healthy, they have some guys with experience up front and should be better. Texas also brings in Tre Watson, a grad transfer from Cal to help out the running backs while the receiving core will be led by Collin Johnson and Lil’ Jordan Humphrey. Finally, is quarterback. Sam Ehlinger is the guy and while he showed flashes last season, he needs to be more consistent. Don’t forget he was a true freshman thrown into the fire last season. He will improve as a sophomore and the rest of the offense makes the improvements necessary to put Texas into the Big 12 title game.

Matthew Postins: Texas will beat Oklahoma in the Red River Showdown for the first time since 2015.

Cameron Brock: Oklahoma wins the National Championship. The entire nation is sleeping on this team. Why? Because the media loves BakerMayfield, an immature brat who ran from competitions with Davis Webb and Patrick Mahomes to take the starting position from a guy who didn’t even sign with the NFL. Trevor Knight is going to play for the future San Antonio team of the Alliance of American Football. I’ve been in the press box and on the field while both Mayfield and Kyler Murray have played. I’m here to tell you that Kyler Murray is better than Baker Mayfield. Lincoln Riley is better than Bob Stoops. We just ranked Oklahoma as the best offensive line in the Big 12. On defense, the Sooners return Big 12 Freshman of the Year Kenneth Murray. Oklahoma is the real deal folks. Only Oklahoma can stop Oklahoma this season.

Dave Beall: OU doesn’t make the Big 12 title game. Who does? I don’t know. The Big 12 is gong into logjam mode this season and no team has ever won the Big 12 four years in a row for a reason. Every team has lulls and while the Sooners having one is less noticeable than most they still have them. Last season with maybe the best college quarterback ever and definitely the best one to ever wear the crimson and cream OU won 11 games, won the league, and made the playoff. But 3 of those wins against Texas, Kansas State, and Baylor were one possession affairs and Bedlam was trading haymakers to an eventual Sooner win that felt a lot narrower than the 10 point win it was. Baker Mayfield’s gamer mentality and sheer will to win might have been the difference in making it to the Rose bowl instead of going 10-2 or 9-3. The offense will still be excellent this season, easily top 10 nationally, but will the new QB have the clutch gene to win those tight games when Mike Stoops defense does what it always does and disappears for half the season?
