Key Players

Abilene Christian

QB Luke Anthony – Redshirt sophomore Luke Anthony is the clear leader of the unit after throwing 11 touchdowns last season during a solid redshirt freshman campaign. He has been named a captain for this coming season. He earned the starting spot with three games to play in 2017 and threw for 345 yards in his first start.

WR D.J. Fuller – Fuller missed last season and comes back giving ACU one of the top deep threats in the Southland Conference this season. Two years ago he averaged almost 15 yards per catch and scored five touchdowns.

S Bolu Onifade- Onifade is a preseason second team All-Southland Conference pick and leads one of the best trio of safeties in the conference with Brandon Richmond and Erik Huhn. This unit will need to hold its own against the Baylor offense.

Baylor

QB Charlie Brewer- While he did appear in 8 games last season, Charlie only started 4 games in 2017. Even though he didn’t play a full season, Charlie was good enough to earn Big 12 Co-Offensive freshman of the year award by the coaches. He did so throwing for 11 touchdowns and only 4 interceptions. He also completed 68.1% of his passes last season. I truly believe that right now, Charlie is the second-best quarterback in the Big 12 behind only Will Grier. I am curious to see how he progresses this season.

WR Jalen Hurd- The former Tennessee running back is now eligible to play this season but not at running back but at wide receiver. We all know the talent Jalen posses and he can take it the distance any time he touches the football. But how will his transition look in this offense?

DT Ira Lewis- Arguably the best defensive player for Baylor and likely the best pass rusher heading into the season. Last season, Ira had 5.5 sacks and 11.5 tackles for loss at defensive tackle which is pretty-darn impressive. Now, with another year under his belt, I expect Ira to have an even bigger season this year.

Key Storyline

I know Baylor got upset last season in the opener against Liberty, but this isn’t the 2017 Baylor team. I am sure some of you are asking, why didn’t you mention Abilene Christian? Well, because this shouldn’t even be a close game and no matter what I say about the Wildcats, I think you can throw a true game plan out the window because Baylor has too much talent for ACU to hang around. I am excited to see how this offensive line will look in this opener because they really struggled to open lanes for the running backs last season. With experienced guys up front, Baylor should be able to run the football at will in this game to really help build some confidence heading into week two against UTSA. Baylor will roll to a win here with a 45-17 victory.
