Matt Campbell has Fifth-Best Odds to be Next USC Head Coach

NCAA Football: Texas Christian at Iowa State

The USC job isn’t even open, but there are plenty of rumors surrounding whether or not Clay Helton is going to keep his job beyond this season. It’s never good when Snoop Dog wants you to be fired. The Trojans have had a rough season going 5-6 and needing to shock undefeated Notre Dame on Saturday night to become bowl eligible.

So with all that being said, the Vegas oddsmakers are already preparing for an opening at USC and have created odds for who will be the next head coach. Once again, a familiar Big 12 name is being discussed, with Iowa State’s Matt Campbell landing the fifth-best odds behind Washington’s Chris Petersen, Jack Del Rio, Ravens head coach Jim Harbaugh and Syracuse’s Dino Babers. Campbell has the same odds as Penn State head coach James Franklin.

Obviously this is far different from when Vegas had Campbell on the list to be the Louisville head coach. That would have been a lateral move. USC is not a lateral move, but Campbell also has zero ties to the West Coast, and the job isn’t even open yet. So at this point, there is no reason to fret.

It’s safe to say that any job that comes open will have Campbell’s name on it, and I’m sure most Iowa State fans are OK with it and have come to understand that it’s generally very flattering. There weren’t many lists that Paul Rhoads was popping up on to be the next head coach anywhere.

Once again, what all Ohio State fans should be rooting for: Urban Meyer NOT to retire.
