I had so many questions for this week’s mailbag, I had to break it up into two parts. So, without further due, here is part two of the mailbag. Enjoy! (Also, here is Part 1 if you missed it!)
@KBehr68 asks: Who gets the Alamo Bowl?
Duke: In case anyone doesn’t know, I live in the San Antonio area, so I appreciate KBehr giving a shout out to my favorite non NY6 bowl game. So, right now I think Utah will represent the Pac-12 in this one and either West Virginia or Iowa State will get the nod to represent the Big 12. Already, the Big 12 confirmed that the loser of the Big 12 Championship gets the Sugar Bowl, so that rules out Texas. No matter if it’s WVU or Iowa State, I will be happy and enjoy the game as I always do here in the Alamo city.
@cychas87 asks: Coming up for Nerdageddon? Iowa State vs Drake?
Duke: Sorry but I won’t be heading up to Ames for that one. I will be covering the Big 12 championship game for the website, so I will have my hands full there. However, I did mention I Twitter that I want to go to a Big 12 non-conference game and Iowa State fans were all in my mentions to take a trip to Ames. So as of right now, I thought about it and instead of going in September for a non-conference game, I will make a trip up to Ames in November when they take on Texas. Right now, that game looks like it will be a huge matchup. I am looking forward to finally getting to see Jack Trice Stadium in person and check out the gameday atmosphere.
@PetittFarms asks: Your prediction on Dana returning to Morgantown? What coaching chances does WVU see on the defensive side of the ball?
Duke: I do think that Dana will come back next season. I really don’t have any doubt about that now. As for defensive coordinator Tony Gibson, I don’t feel the same. While the Mountaineers improved from the 2017 season, they finished fifth in total defense this season. They were much better stopping the run this season, but their pass defense was spotty at best. My biggest issue with them was sacks. I don’t think they pressured opposing quarterbacks. In fact, they were tied for seventh in the conference in that category. They were also seventh in red zone defense which isn’t very good either. I do think it is time for a new voice on defense.
@TristyMc asks: Kind of obvious, but your personal pick for Texas Tech’s new HC?
Duke: Our staff did an entire roundtable on this and you can find not just my answer, but our staff picks as well. Enjoy!
@georgeJhawk asks: If Misery was still in the Big 12, would they have finished above anyone besides Kansas?
Duke: Is that what people call Missouri? Misery? That’s pretty good. Kudos for whoever came up with that. As for my answer, I haven’t watched a Missouri or Misery game since they played in the Texas Bowl last year where they got their ass handed to them by Texas. With that being said, I don’t want to talk about irrelevant SEC programs in my mailbag. There are already enough irrelevant programs in that conference as is.
@fraseriii asks: Over/Under 1.5 of 4-star recruits for Les Miles in his first class at Kansas?
Duke: Considering the early signing period is in a few weeks, and the current commits for Kansas in the 2019 class (One commit), I will go with the under here. It’s too late in my opinion for that to happen but I wouldn’t be surprised one bit if he can get 2 or 3 for the 2020 class.
