Big 12 Recruiting: Texas Tech Strongly in The Mix for Running Back Darrin Smith

On Sunday afternoon, I got the chance to speak with running back Darrin Smith (5’8”, 183 lbs.) out of Frisco, Texas (Lone Star HS). As of right now, Darrin holds quite a few offers such as TCU, BYU and Colorado to name a few. So, here is my chat with Darrin about his recruitment and it appears that the several schools will battle it out for his signature. Who are they? Find out right here in this interview.
HCS: Who are you’re top schools right now?
Smith: “At this time, I’m looking at UCF, Memphis, Texas Tech, ULM and FAU,”
HCS: Do you currently hold an offer from Texas Tech?
Smith: “I did with the old staff, but I have been in contact with the new staff though.”
HCS: You do hold a TCU offer, is there any interest there or are you more locked in on Texas Tech?
Smith: “I’m more locked in with Tech. TCU has a great backfield with the two running backs they have there, and I want to play early, and I can do that at Texas Tech.”
HCS: Speaking of Texas Tech, what do you think about the transition from Kliff Kingsbury to Matt Wells there?
Smith: “I actually like the switch a lot. Not knocking on their offense because it was very successful, but they were more of an air-raid team. With the new staff with coach Yost (OC), and Smith (RB Coach) they run more of a balanced offense and ran a lot of heavy packages at Utah State.”
HCS: You mentioned coach Yost and I am curious about your thoughts on his hair?
Smith: “Ha, it’s different but it shows how much he can relate to us by he’s a down to earth guy that really cares about the game.”
HCS: Is there anything about Texas Tech itself that separates them from other schools you are looking at?
Smith: “It’s a beautiful campus with a rich tradition. The alumni are great, and they have great facilities. Plus, it’s five hours away from home so that allows my family to be able to come to my games and they will be able to come to other Big 12 games that are near Texas.”
HCS: How do you think you would fit in the offense at Texas Tech right now?
Smith: “I’d be a three down back, be able to run the ball inside and outside, pass block and catch out of the backfield. I feel like Tech doesn’t have any true three down back there.”
HCS: Do you have any in home visits or campus visits planned right now?
Smith: “No home visits but I have visits in January that aren’t set yet.”
HCS: Do you have a commitment date in mind?
Smith: “I am going to announce on the next (February) signing day, unless I feel 100% positive with that school.”
