Top 25 Returning Big 12 Baseball Players, No. 9: Davis Wendzel, Baylor IF

Wendzel is one of the hottest prospects MLB is looking at right now.
In 59 games at third base, he committed just three errors. He finished 2018 with 69 assists and 37 putouts. That is a lot of baseballs flying his way. He managed to be apart of more than 100 outs while only committing three errors.
It’s not just Wendzel’s fielding ability that makes him so special though. He was drafted by the Boston Red Sox last season, and you bet he’ll be drafted again this season. Wendzel is a pure baseball player. In both seasons, his average has been above .300 while playing in at least 50 games and making at least 47 starts. He’s belted eight homers in each of his two seasons. Perhaps, his most impressive attribute is his plate approach. He walked 15 times and only struck 10 times against Big 12 pitchers last year. Overall, he walked 39 times and struck out 40. But he’s also had to wear a few baseballs. Big 12 pitchers placed him on base with mistakes twice as many times as they struck Wendzel out last season. He doesn’t ground out into many double plays either. In his 109 career games, he’s produced five double play balls. That’s five double plays in 369 at-bats.
Let’s not forget to mention, his average skyrocketed against Big 12 pitching last season. Wendzel hit .348 in conference play. He averaged an rbi per game and scored 12 runs while adding 11 doubles. He has a Big 12 Tournament Championship and two NCAA Regional appearances to his resume. Wendzel’s been dangerous, and he’s only going to improve.
