Baker Mayfield Rips Sam Ehlinger, Adds Texas ‘Is Not Back’

Baker Mayfield may be preparing for Year 2 in the NFL with high expectations in Cleveland, but he certainly isn’t someone who forgets his roots.

Mayfield was of course the Heisman-winning quarterback at Oklahoma, where there is no love lost for the Texas Longhorns. Also, Mayfield went to Lake Travis high school in Austin, where there is no love lost for Westlake. Needless to say, this doesn’t put current Texas Longhorns quarterback, and former Westlake star, Sam Ehlinger high on Mayfield’s “buddy” list.

While Mayfield is now in the NFL, Ehlinger is preparing for the 2019 season with the Longhorns, who have their highest expectations in years after reaching the Big 12 Championship Game last season and then beating Texas in the Sugar Bowl. After the game, Ehlinger declared Texas as being “back”.

Well, Mayfield went on SportsTalk 1400 in Norman and had this to say about the Longhorns, saying, “They said that about Notre Dame a couple years ago…I’m sick of that crap,” Mayfield said in an interview on SportsTalk1400’s The Rush during his Wednesday camp. “He couldn’t even beat Lake Travis, so I don’t really care. His opinion on anything winning [doesn’t matter]. You know, Westlake’s a great program, but the two best quarterbacks to come out of there are Drew Brees and Nick Foles. Sam can stay down there in Texas.”

Mayfield went on to add, “That’ll stir the pot. He doesn’t like me, and I hope he knows I don’t like him either.”

Woof! You know, at first this seems toolish for Mayfield to do. Here’s an NFL quarterback still trying to settle scores with current college kids. But then I turn around and think it’s awesome. It’s what makes Baker Mayfield … well, Baker Mayfield. Also, with trash talk and rivalries going by the wayside in many corners, Mayfield is trying to keep that fire burning, which I can definitely appreciate.

Here is Mayfield’s entire statement.
