Iowa State Cyclones Basketball: 2019-20 Schedule Analysis

NCAA Basketball: NCAA Tournament-First Round-Iowa State vs Ohio State

Leading up to Big 12 media days in Kansas City Heartland College Sports will analyze each of the Big 12 men’s basketball schedules. Today it’s the Iowa State Cyclones.

Season opener: The Cyclones open the season at home against Mississippi Valley State. Unlike some of its other league mates, Iowa State has some true road games on its schedule during non-conference (well, okay, just one).

Tournaments: ISU has just one tournament, but it’s a nice one — the Battle 4 Atlantis in the Bahamas (assuming the islands are recovered from the hurricane by then), where the Cyclones could end up playing Michigan and North Carolina back-to-back. The Cyclones also have their traditional Cy-Hawk game with Iowa on Dec. 12. This one is in Ames.

The Big 12/Big East Game: Iowa State draws a home game in the inaugural cross-conference series as it hosts Seton Hall on Dec. 8.

The Big 12/SEC Game: I’m not sure if ISU ordered a Final Four team from a year ago, but that’s what it’s getting as the Cyclones head to Auburn to face Bruce Pearl’s Tigers.

The Big Non-Con: Well Michigan and North Carolina back-to-back (potentially) is pretty big. Let’s peg Michigan here since that opener in the Bahamas is a done deal. The Wolverines reached the Sweet 16 a year ago, losing to Texas Tech.

Mid-Major Danger: Southern Miss seems an appropriate selection here. The Golden Eagles went 20-13 last year, reached the second round of the Conference USA Tournament and played in postseason action.

Big 12 Opener: The Cyclones go to TCU to face the Horned Frogs on Jan. 4.

The ‘Big’ Big 12 stretch: If I’m ISU I’m looking at that four-game stretch in February that includes a home game with Texas, a road game with Kansas, and then back-to-back home games with Texas Tech and TCU. That Horned Frogs rematch could be a game the Cyclones sleep on after expending so much energy against arguably the league’s two best teams back-to-back. That’s how conference tournament seeding changes on a dime.
