Texas Tech and Baylor Fun Fact: For the first time since 2008, this game will be played at one of the school’s home fields. For the past decade this series has been played at either the Cotton Bowl (2010) or Jerry World (2009, 2011-2018).
Key Players
Texas Tech
QB Jett Duffey
After a lackluster performance against Oklahoma, Jett Duffey probably had his best game as a Red Raider last weekend against Oklahoma State. Against the Cowboys, Jett threw for over 400 yards and 4 touchdowns. While he has shown flashes at times, I wonder if he can follow up a performance like that on the road in Waco.
LB Jordyn Brooks
This guy is like the air around you because he is everywhere. Not only does he lead his team in tackles, but he leads the entire Big 12 with 60 total tackles so far this season. Not to mention, he also leads the conference with 10.5 tackles for loss. Jordyn is not just a great player for the Red Raiders defense, but he is also the leader in that locker room. He is the isn’t the straw that stirs the drink, he is the drink.
Baylor
QB Charlie Brewer
Obviously being a quarterback, Charlie is going to play a key role in his offense on Saturday. Charlie has had some ups and downs at time during games this season but what really sticks out to me is that he is taking care of the football. He finally has some decent protection up front and that has helped him throw for 11 touchdowns this season and he has yet to throw an interception all season long.
DT James Lynch
If the Big 12 season ended today, James Lynch is my Big 12 defensive player of the year. He has 6 sacks from the defensive tackle position which isn’t easy to do by any means. James is someone who can ruin an offense’s day and I am sure that Tech will always be aware of him by throwing some double teams his way.
Key Storylines
Texas Tech
I am still not quite sure what to make of this Tech offense since this will be Jett Duffey’s third start this season, but I would bet that they won’t commit to the passing game a whole bunch. They have seemed to be more evenly balanced this season but going up against Baylor’s defensive line may force them to throw the ball more than they would like to. Will Jett Duffey be able to handle that on the road? Defensively for Tech, they did a good job of not giving up big plays last week and they will do the same in Waco. Don’t let Baylor control this game and that starts with stopping the run.
Baylor
Hopefully Charlie will be at 100% on Saturday however, I think Baylor will try and get the ground game going early and often. Tech ranks in the bottom tier of Big 12 rushing defenses and I am sure Matt Rhule and company will get running backs John Lovett and JaMycal Hasty plenty of touches in this game. This also could be a great game to get some downfield throws off the play action. Defensively, it’s a simple plan for me at least. Stack up the box and stop the run game which includes Jett Duffey. Make him beat you from the pocket and find out if that Oklahoma State game was a fluke.
Prediction
Baylor: 34 Texas Tech: 21
I am still not quite sold on Texas Tech. Those five turnovers Oklahoma State had put Tech in some great spots, but Baylor quarterback Charlie Brewer is no freshman. He is a veteran who doesn’t make mistakes like that. Baylor will play a clean game at home and when push comes to shove, I think the Bears are just a straight up better team. The Bears will control the game on the ground and make a few big plays to wide outs Denzel Mims and Tyquan Thornton when needed. Also, I don’t think Jett Duffey will be able to recreate a performance like he did last weekend. The Red Raiders will keep things interesting before Baylor breaks away late.
