Big 12 Football Players of the Week: Skylar Thompson, Malcolm Rodriguez Lead the Way

NCAA Football: Nicholls State at Kansas State

It’s time to name our Big 12 Players of the Week as we look at the top performances on offense, defense and special teams. Yes, there are always several players to debate, but we try to make this as fair as we can, while backing up our decision with stats and facts.

Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week: Kansas State QB Skylar Thompson

The Wildcats slayed the Sooners on Saturday afternoon in the biggest upset of the college football weekend. Thompson was a huge part of that 48-41 outcome. He was steady through the air, going 18/28 for 213 yards, and while he didn’t throw a touchdown, he didn’t throw an interception as well. But it was on the ground where Thompson was efficient, with 13 carries for 39 yards and four touchdowns. It was his best game of the season in the biggest game of the year. That’s what you look for in your leaders.

Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week: Oklahoma State LB Malcolm Rodriguez

Rodriguez played an integral role in Oklahoma State’s upset at Iowa State on Saturday afternoon. He led all players with 11 totals tackles, included six solo. He had a pass defended, but most importantly he intercepted Brock Purdy and returned it for six points to break a 27-27 tie game in the fourth quarter, scoring the go-ahead touchdown that turned out to be the game winner. One week after Oklahoma State fans wondered whether or not they would become bowl eligible, now the Pokes are part of a jumbled and confusing Big 12 standings. Rodriguez was a huge part of that.

Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week: Oklahoma State K Matt Ammendola

Ammendola also played a big role in the upset on Saturday. He kicked two field goals from 49 and 40 yards in the second half, while also knocking through four of four extra points. He accounted for a crucial ten points in Oklahoma State’s win and the difference between OSU’s kicking game and Iowa State’s was stark. The Cowboys have plenty to work out, but they have the best kicker in the Big 12 and he proved his worth on Saturday in Ames.
