Matt Campbell Given Best Odds to be Florida State’s Next Head Coach

When former Florida State head coach Willie Taggart looked to be on thin ice earlier this season, Las Vegas started putting odds on who might be the next head coach. Oklahoma State’s Mike Gundy and Iowa State’s Matt Campbell both made the list then. Now with Taggart being fired, a new list of odds is out and Campbell finds himself atop the list.
Odds to be Florida State’s head coach Week 1 of 2020
Matt Campbell +300
Mark Stoops +400
Bob Stoops +500
P.J. Fleck +500
James Franklin +600
Urban Meyer 600
Josh Heupel +700
Dino Babers +1000
Matt Rhule +1000
That’s quite a list, with four guys on there with Big 12 ties, heck five if you want to include former OU offensive coordinator Josh Heupel. Campbell at No. 1 is not shocking, but my gut tells me that’s not an area of the country he has interest in, plus he has an enormous buyout, and Florida State just had to pay upwards of $20 million to get Taggart to leave.
Bob Stoops?! Huh?! I don’t see that at this point in his life. We interviewed him last month and he seemed more than happy with his current situation in life.
Matt Rhule seems more likely than the other two Big 12 names on the list to have any interest, but that’s just based on him having a wandering eye the last two offseasons, but he also recent signed an extension. So maybe he’s either Baylor or NFL and that’s it.
Either way, this is going to be a fun coaching job to follow because several Big 12 names will continue to be tied to it.
