The Texas Longhorns lost a heartbreaker on Saturday in Ames against Iowa State. After coming back from 20-7 down to take a 21-20 lead, which they held until the final minutes. With Texas trying to hold onto its lead, Iowa State came down the field and had a chance to win on a 42-yard field goal with two minutes to play.
However, Texas defensive lineman Malcolm Roach jumped offsides, giving Iowa State five yards and a first down, and they would kick a 36-yard field goal as time expired for a 23-21 win. The win shattered Texas’ hopes of playing in the Big 12 Championship Game for a second-straight year and made Iowa State bowl eligible for a third-straight season.
Roach has drawn the ire of many Texas fans in recent days, understandably so, based on his jump offsides.
But to the lineman’s credit, he showed up for his media appearance on Tuesday and took full responsibility, saying, “I was just trying to make a play for the team and block the kick,” adding, “I probably never felt like that after a loss before.”

It doesn’t make up for the mistake and the loss for the Longhorns, however there is no guarantee Texas still doesn’t lose the game if Roach doesn’t jump off sides. But it culminates a frustrating season for the Longhorns, who had aspirations of the College Football Playoff and a top 10 preseason ranking, but who are now 6-4 and just trying to get to a decent bowl game.
