Report: Baylor Bears Targeting Virginia Tech’s Justin Fuente as Next Head Coach

NCAA Football: Virginia Tech at Virginia

With the Baylor Bears searching for a new head coach following the departure of Matt Rhule to the Carolina Panthers, a big name has emerged as a target for the Bears.

According to Pete Thamel of Yahoo Sports, Baylor is set to interview Virginia Tech head coach Justin Fuente in the next 24 hours to discuss the opening.

Baylor is trying to replace Rhule who helped turn the program around from 1-11 in his first season in 2017 to 11-3 this past season, which included a trip to the Big 12 Championship Game and then the Sugar Bowl.

Plenty of internal names have emerged at Baylor, most notably Joey Mcguire, but here is who the Heartland College Sports crew selected in our HCS roundtable discussing who Baylor should hire.

Fuente just wrapped up his fourth season at Virginia Tech where he went 8-5 and finished second in the ACC Coastal with a trip to the Belk Bowl. He won the Coastal in his first season and is 33-20 overall and 20-12 in the ACC. Prior to that he spent four years at Memphis where he team went from 4-8 to 9-3 in a four-year window.

Fuente has some Big 12 experience as he was a player at OU in 1996 and 1997 and coached at TCU from 2007 to 2011, however that was prior to the program joining the conference.
