After reviewing each of the Big 12 games for Week 9 of the league season (ending Feb. 29), here is the Heartland College Sports Men’s Basketball Starting 5.
G DEVON DOTSON, KANSAS
The sophomore guard continues to cruise for the Jayhawks. Against Oklahoma State he only had 11 points, but he also grabbed 5 rebounds and dished out 4 assists. Then, against Kansas State, he handled the scoring load, pouring in 25 points in the Sunflower State Showdown game.
F KRISTIAN DOOLITTLE, OKLAHOMA
The senior continues to be a steady part of Oklahoma’s potential run to an NCAA Tournament berth. Against Texas Tech, Doolittle scored 19 points and grabbed 7 rebounds in a 14-point win over the Red Raiders. He also had three steals. Then, in Morgantown, WV, on Saturday, Doolittle poured in 19 more points, grabbed 7 more rebounds and dished out 3 assists as the Sooners beat the West Virginia Mountaineers, 73-62.
G ANDREW JONES, TEXAS
Jones had back-to-back 22-point nights for the Longhorns, going 7-for-13 with five 3-pointers against West Virginia (a 67-57 win) and then going 8-of-14 with three 3-pointers against Texas Tech (a 68-58 win). This feels like the player we were all hoping Jones could be after he was cleared to start the season. He played all but two minutes this past week.
G DESMOND BANE, TCU
You can’t keep Bane down for long, and Big 12 teams have tried. In the loss to Iowa State Bane started slow but ended up with 22 points and 11 rebounds, a double-double. Then, in the upset win over Baylor, Bane scored 23 points, had 5 rebounds and 4 assists in 37 minutes of action. He also shot 50 percent from the floor.
F CAMERON MCGRIFF, OKLAHOMA STATE
The senior is putting in some quality performances down the stretch. Against Kansas he had 16 points, 5 rebounds and a blocked shot in a loss. But, against Iowa State, McGriff had 19 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists to lead the Cowboys to a win over the Cyclones. He’s been the best thing about Oklahoma State the past month.
THE SIXTH MAN
F DAVID MCCORMACK, KANSAS
The sophomore had a quality week off the bench for the Jayhawks, scoring 10 points and grabbing 4 rebounds in the blowout win over Oklahoma State, and then scoring 9 points and collecting 4 rebounds against Kansas State. Against the Wildcats he also had an assist and two steals. The Jayhawks need that kind of play from McCormack down the stretch to spell Udoka Azubuike.
