Oklahoma Sooners: 2020 Spring Practice Preview

NCAA Football: Oklahoma at Iowa State

College basketball is heading down the home stretch, college baseball has started, but let’s not forget (I know many of you aren’t) that spring practice is already getting underway across the country. We will handle spring previews for every Big 12 football team and roll them out based on when their respective spring practices begin. Next up is the Oklahoma Sooners who will start up spring practice on Tuesday March 10th.

MOST EXCITING RETURNEE: QB Spencer Rattler

All eyes will be on Spencer Rattler this spring. Don’t be fooled by any coach speak from Lincoln Riley. THERE IS NO QUARTERBACK BATTLE! This is Spencer’s job and his time is up. I feel like we have been asking bout the quarterback position for the last three seasons since Baker Mayfield left but the Sooners just keep finding answers and producing great quarterbacks. Can the former five-star quarterback make the strides necessary to be the next great Sooner quarterback?

MOST EXCITING NEWCOMER: DT Perrion Winfrey (Iowa Western C.C.)

Perrion comes in as the number one ranked JUCO defensive tackle and that is exactly the type of guy that the Sooners need. With no Neville Gallimore holding down the middle of the defensive line, Perrion is someone who will likely be called upon early or at the very least, be in the rotation up front.

OFFENSIVE STORYLINE TO WATCH: The Wide Receiver Group

I could have gone with the offensive line or quarterback, but I will be very interested to see who steps up in that wide receiver group. With superstar CeeDee Lamb going to be a top pick in the NFL Draft, the only returning player with over 350 yards is Charleston Rambo. Plus, the Sooners lose a few other wide outs who were seniors that played smaller roles. But between Trejan Bridges, Theo Wease and Jadon Haselwood, one or two of those talented sophomores will need to step up this spring to establish themselves as a top target for quarterback Spencer Rattler.

DEFENSIVE STORYLINE TO WATCH: Replacing the Trio

This defense will lose their top three players from the 2019 season in linebacker Kenneth Murray, defensive tackler Neville Gallimore and cornerback Parnell Motley. Between early enrollees and experienced guys on the roster, it will be something to keep track of during spring ball to see who can establish themselves early.
