Big Friday for the Big 12

NCAA Football: Oklahoma at West Virginia

Even though there are no sports going on, there is always one thing in college football that you can count on that never sleeps. Recruiting never stops and at times is chaotic to say the least. Sometimes things can go your way and sometimes it can all come crashing down in a span of minutes. On Friday, three teams in the Big 12 had a solid day as they got some key commitments for the 2021 class.

Oklahoma Sooners

It was quite a day for Lincoln Riley and company as they got two crucial commitments on Friday afternoon. It all started when 4-star wide receiver Mario Williams (Plant City, FL) gave the Sooners their biggest commitment to date for the 2021 cycle. Williams is a top fifty player in the 2021 class according to 247 Sports. It is no secret that Oklahoma has had success with wide outs over the years and Williams could be next in line to be the next big thing in Norman.

Joining Mario Williams was 4-star outside linebacker Clayton Smith out of Texarkana, Texas. Smith was once labeled as a Texas lean but it was not long before Oklahoma became the talk of the town for him. With Smith on board, he becomes Oklahoma’s highest rated defensive player for the 2021 class.

Not only did the Sooners jump into the top 25 class rankings after the Williams and Smith commitments but this was just the tip of the iceberg as Oklahoma looks to build off these two key commitments.

Oklahoma State

It is not often we talk about the Cowboys having big time commitments but on Friday, they got a huge commitment when 4-star inside linebacker Collin Oliver out of Edmond, Oklahoma announced his decision. Oliver was never offered by the Sooners, but it was nice to see Oklahoma State keep such a highly touted player in state. Oliver is the highest rated commit for the Cowboys 2021 class according to 247 Sports.

Now the Cowboys still have some work to do on the recruiting trail as they currently have the 64th ranked 2021 class but it was a big plus for them to land Oliver and try to get some momentum going.

With all the focus on Oklahoma and Oklahoma State on Friday, the Texas Longhorns made a late splash on Friday afternoon. 3-star running back Jonathon Brooks out of Hallettsville, Texas announced his decision to Texas to give the Longhorns their eleventh commitment for the 2021 class. While Brooks may not be the biggest back, it is his speed and versatility that made Texas pursue him. With Brooks on board, Texas now has jumped to the eighth best class for the 2021 cycle according to 247 Sports.
