Student-athletes across the country are taking a stand for racial and social injustice, and that list now includes DeMarvion Overshown of the Texas Longhorns.
Overshown put up a tweet where he said he would specifically sit out of all team activities until “real action” is taken. Overshown added, “We are constantly preached urgency throughout the program and I feel that the university should be held to the same standard.”
It remains to be seen what exactly Overshown specifically wants to see. However this news comes just a few weeks after Texas athletes were requesting the removal of “The Eyes of Texas” as the school song and changes to names of campus buildings in an effort to make the Austin campus more inclusive to the black community.
At that time, the athletes said in a statement, “The recent events across the country regarding racial injustice have brought to light the systemic racism that has always been prevalent in our country as well as the racism that has historically plagued our campus.”
On the field, the Longhorns are scheduled to open to the season September 5th against South Florida.
