Kansas Football Has a New Home Opener

NCAA Football: Texas at Kansas

The Kansas Jayhawks have found a new opponent to open the 2020 college football season. While the season remains in jeopardy, many teams are still scrambling for non-conference opponents due to other conference cancelling their non-conference games completely.

That is not the case as the Big 12 wants to play a full schedule. Still, there are some holes on the schedule that need to be filled in for some teams and in the case of the Jayhawks, they were able to find a replacement in Southern Illinois set for August 29th.

Originally, the Jayhawks were set to host New Hampshire on September 5th, but the Colonial Athletic Association and New Hampshire decided to suspend fall sports for the 2020 season.

Kansas Athletic Director Jeff Long released the following statement on Saturday morning. “As we researched options for replacing our cancelled opening game, we received recommendations from our medical professionals, reviewed the opportunity with our campus leaders, and looked regionally for a quality opponent. Importantly, Southern Illinois agreed to follow the Big 12 testing protocols once they have been finalized. SIU provides us a challenge as we open the 2020 season.”

It even got head coach Les Miles fired up saying “We are excited for the opportunity to start fall camp practices on July 31st and prepare to take on a good Southern Illinois football team. We feel that playing this game will prove beneficial for both programs for many reasons, especially due to SIU’s proximity to Lawrence. Coach Hill will have his team prepared to play and we look forward to the challenge at The Booth on August 29th.”

This is a good sign for football in the Big 12 and I hope that more Big 12 teams are able to find opponents so that if we do have a college football season, these Big 12 teams will be ready and have a plan in place. It is possible that in the next few days, we could see more Big 12 teams finding some new opponents to play.
