A major shake up is coming to the Texas Tech Red Raiders offense. Head coach Matt Wells announced on Wednesday he was benching quarterback Alan Bowman and would be rolling with Henry Colombi as his starter.
The move comes during Texas Tech’s bye week and following a 31-15 loss on the road to the Iowa State Cyclones. Bowman was benched in the middle of the game after completing 13-22 passes for 97 yards and no touchdowns.
Colombi replaced Bowman and led the team on its only touchdown drive of the day completing 10-12 passes for 115 yards in just two drives. He also showed far more mobility in the pocket than Bowman.
Colombi also played in the previous week’s loss to Kansas State after Bowman had to leave the game with an injury. Colombi completed 30-42 passes for 244 yards and two touchdowns and one interception.
Tech’s offense has been a tale of two offenses under each QB. The Red Raiders haven’t scored one point in the last 10 drives with Bowman at QB, while Colombi has led the team to 29 points over 10 drives of his own.
The Red Raiders are 0-3 in Big 12 play with losses to Texas, Kansas State and Iowa State. They’ll debut the new offense under Colombi with a 4:30 CST kick off on Saturday, October 24th, against the Mountaineers in Lubbock.
