It was nice of Kansas to come to Norman, Oklahoma and give the Sooners a bye week break on Saturday. In no way, shape or form were the Jayhawks going to come to the Palace on the Prairie and give the Sooners a scare. In fact, the only scary part was how long this game took due to the score getting out of hand. And of course, the health of Sooners quarterback Spencer Rattler.
The Sooners picked off Kansas quarterback Jalon Daniels in the very first possession of the game and never looked back. Oklahoma would put up 31 unanswered points in the first half and as time expired, the Jayhawks finally hit the scoreboard for a whopping three points. As boring as the first half was, all eyes were on Oklahoma starting quarterback Spencer Rattler who appeared to be shaken up a bit while running the football on a scoring play in the second quarter. Despite the minor injury, Spencer Rattler would stay in for the following drive and it would of course lead to another Sooners score.
Rattler would play the first two drives of the second half and after two successful drives, the Sooners were up 41-3 and that would be the end of Spencer Rattler for the day. Backups Tanner Mordecai and Chandler Morris would get playing time as well as the Sooners lit up the scoreboard to an easy 62-9 win.
While the focus is normally on the Oklahoma passing game, it was the run game that played a major part in the easy victory. The offense racked up 200 rushing yards with Rhamondre Stevenson leading the way for 104 yards but overall, the Sooners had six rushing scores as Stevenson, T.J. Pledger, Marcus Major, Spencer Rattler, and Chandler Morris all had at least a rushing touchdown on Saturday.
Defensively, the Sooners feasted on the Kansas offensive line and put all sorts of pressure on Jalon Daniels all game long. The defense held Kansas to just 246 yards with their backups in for a lot of the game and forced the Jayhawks to go 3 for 19 on third down.
The Sooners will have a bye week next week so if you are counting bye weeks, that makes two straight bye weeks including this game before they take on in-state rival, Oklahoma State. That matchup will be much more exciting than this snoozer and will likely have major Big 12 title implications.
