Leading up to the 2020-21 Big 12 basketball season, Heartland College Sports will analyze each of the Big 12 men’s basketball schedules. Today it’s the Texas Tech Red Raiders.
Season opener: Texas Tech starts the season at home against Northwestern State on Nov. 25. It’s the first of back-to-back games against Southland Conference programs.
Tournaments: Texas Tech is not headed to a tournament this year.
The Big 12/Big East Game: Texas Tech is set to host St. John’s on Dec. 3.
The Big 12/SEC Game: Texas Tech will travel to LSU on Jan. 30.
The Big Non-Con: Houston should be a formidable opponent for the Red Raiders when they meet at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth on Nov. 29. It will be Texas Tech’s third game in five days. The Cougars won 23 games last year and tied for the regular-season title in the American Athletic Conference.
Mid-Major Danger: The Abilene Christian Wildcats got into the NCAA Tournament just a couple of years go and are coming off a 20-win season that saw them tie for second place in the Southland Conference. The Red Raiders face the Wildcats on Dec. 9.
Big 12 Opener: Texas Tech hosts Kansas on Dec. 17. So that should be fun.
The ‘Big’ Big 12 stretch: The last half-dozen games look like a grind, starting with a home game against West Virginia on Feb. 9. After that it’s a trip to Baylor, a home game with TCU, back-to-back road trips against Kansas and Oklahoma State and the league finale against Texas. This could have a real impact on Tech’s seeding in the Big 12 Tournament.
