Kirk Herbstreit: ‘Is it just me or do you want to play for Matt Campbell?’

NCAA Football: ACC Championship-Clemson vs Miami

Iowa State Cyclones head coach Matt Campbell is, once again, the hottest name in the college football coaching world. This came after Iowa State essentially clinched a spot in the Big 12 Championship Game following the win over Texas on Saturday in Austin. The Cyclones trailed the game for the first 58 minutes before taking the lead on a three-yard TD run by Breece Hall to win the game 23-20.

There’s zero doubt that Campbell, who has done incredible work in Ames, is going to be the hottest coaching name in the sport this offseason. While Campbell has been nationally recognized for the job he has done, things are now at a fever pitch. Add national voices like ESPN’s top analyst Kirk Herbstreit to the list of names who are praising Campbell.

On College GameDay on Saturday, Herbstreit said the following.

There’s no doubt that Herbstreit’s analysis is entirely accurate. If you missed it, just watch this moment where Matt Campbell got emotional after the game in his interview with ABC.

But the question moving forward is can anything get Campbell out of Ames. As our Matthew Postins points out in this piece that highlights five reasons Matt Campbell won’t leave Iowa State any time soon, Campbell has turned down several other interviews before, he doesn’t have an agent, he loves Ames and makes a ton of money.

That doesn’t mean he won’t eventually leave one day. And there is something to be said for striking while the iron is hot. But the idea that Campbell has one foot out the door is nonsense, and anyone saying otherwise hasn’t followed the Big 12 or Iowa State Cyclones football, and probably couldn’t find Ames, Iowa on a map.
