Big 12 Mailbag Part 2: Iowa State as a CFB Playoff Darkhorse, Plus Conference Rankings

NCAA Football: UL Lafayette at Iowa State

The Big 12 football mailbag was rocking this week. Here is Part 1 about Urban Meyer and much more. Now, here is part two of this week’s mailbag. Enjoy!

@BSchroeder84 asks: Do you think it is an advantage for ISU to play WVU first? Meaning if they played Oklahoma last week would they have been more prepared for the Cyclones compared to not playing at all last week? I am thinking they are going to be ready for Oklahoma after they play the Cyclones.

Duke: Heck no. This would be two teams I would avoid playing in back to back weeks. Iowa State is playing red hot right now and Oklahoma looks like the Oklahoma we thought they would be. If your team is going to play Oklahoma, you want them early in the season not late. Lincoln Riley has yet to lose a game in the month of November and conference championship weekend. Meanwhile, this Iowa State has a nasty defense and Oklahoma does too. Meaning, good luck to the West Virginia offense. I am never a fan of playing the top teams in the conference in back to back weeks. It’s tough.

@DBSportsYT asks: I know it’s been a weird year, Big 10 and Pac-12 not playing much, and games across the country cancelled/postponed, but who holds conference superiority right now? Where does the Big 12 rank?

Duke: Of course, I am going with the Big 12 but surprisingly I normally do not admit that. Are there any teams that belong in the top four? No but when I look at the top four teams in the conference (Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Iowa State and Texas), I think the Big 12 is the deepest it has been in a while. And of course, West Virginia is no slouch either. Next, I would say the SEC, Big Ten, ACC and Pac-12.

@brad_gloeck asks: Is Iowa state a dark horse for playoff considerations?

Duke: Let’s get past the Big 12 title game first before we start talking playoffs. As of right now, unless something drastic happens, the Big 12 is still on the outs as each Big 12 team has at least two losses. If more upsets happen, then it is possible but let’s keep the playoff on the back burner for now.

@mlevere1992 asks: Does the Big12 really need to expand back to 12 teams to complete with the other P5 conferences?

Duke: Michael…….Let’s not go down this road again. We can save this for when we are all bored out of our minds in the summer.
