Report: Urban Meyer Assembling ‘What If’ Staff at Texas

The Urban Meyer rumors just won’t go away for the Texas Longhorns. And maybe that’s because there’s something to it all.

According to a new report from Mike Fisher at CowboyMaven, Meyer is at least having the Texas conversation with himself.

Fisher reports, “The buzz, per two sources close to the Longhorns/Meyer situation, is this: Meyer is putting in the work to assemble a “what-if” staff should he decide to leave his FOX analyst job and re-enter the NCAA grind.’

This report comes days after reports that Urban Meyer’s wife, Shelley, was exploring real estate in the Austin, Texas area.

Tom Herman’s seat is red hot following Texas’ loss to Iowa State over the weekend and there is plenty of debate as to whether or not he should be let go. Our own Derek Duke made the case that Tom Herman should be let go as the head coach of the Longhorns.

As Duke wrote, “At some point, people need to realize that Tom Herman will not get Texas back to national relevance. He has fired his staff once already, getting a brand new offensive and defensive coordinator and when that does not work, there is only one man left standing.”

Herman actually addressed the rumors about Urban Meyer two weeks ago and admitted, “It gets exhausting.”

Herman reached the Big 12 Championship Game in 2018, but since then Texas is 13-8. This is all despite Texas recruiting Top 10 classes the last three seasons, but the 2021 class is ranked No. 17 in the country and is ranked behind the Oklahoma Sooners and their in-state rival Texas A&M Aggies.

The Longhorns go on the road to take on the Kansas State Wildcats this weekend for an 11:00 a.m. kick off.
